Part of a child growing up is his or her ability to meet developmental milestones. Each milestone is important and necessary in order to go from one milestone to the next. There are many milestones that a child must go through before growing up.
Developmental milestones can include mental, social, emotional, and physical developments. Each milestone must address all aspects listed in order to complete it. For example, if a child learns to feed themselves they become able to eat out socially without waiting to be fed. This raises their self esteem which connects to the emotional aspect. They feel better about themselves because the succeeded which covers the mental aspect. They physically feed themselves then that is the physical.
A developmental milestone is something new that a child accomplished at a particular time. Milestones can include smiling or rolling over to reading a book. Each developmental milestone happens at a certain age. It doesn’t have to be the exact time for every child but it does need to be within a few months of that particular time. If not, then something else may be causing the delay.
Children may accomplish these developmental milestones around the same age however when a child doesn’t make the milestone then there may be an underlying problem that doctors will treat in order to help that child across the particular milestone. After that, your child may develop normally. They just needed assistance over one. Or maybe it is a sign that something is wrong and it affects all the milestones from that age on.
Making sure a child stays on track takes the teamwork of parents and healthcare professionals. It can also involve child care professionals that see the child regularly. As a parent, you have the right and authority to call a meeting with your child’s professional team in order to determine if anything needs to be changed, left the same, or if you should do something different.
Together, if a child is not meeting milestones like they should, they can work at a plan to get the child back on track. Sometimes this treatment for learning disabilities can include things to do at home such as repetition. The doctor may have another solution to the problem which may include consulting with a specialist to get the child help they need. When working with a child who has a learning disability the parents and professionals alike will notice a change in the child as they focus on this problem.
However it is very important that the parents and professionals still focus on other learning milestones as well so nothing is neglected.
No one knows your child like you do so you want to keep aware of changes in behavior, mental capabilities, and social confidence in order to keep your child functioning healthy.
